Kara grew up in Bloomington, graduating from Bloomington High School North in 1988. While at North she was a member of the swim team.
After high school she attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts where she earned her B.A. in Government in 1992. She carried over her love of swimming by joining the swim team at Smith College.
After college she worked at the Monroe County Voter Registration office, and Monroe County Clerk’s office. However, it was her work as a court reporter for Judge Bridges in Monroe County Circuit Court Division V that strengthened and inspired her interest in the legal system. She earned her law degree from Indiana University School of Law in 2000.
After graduating from Indiana University School of Law she was sworn in to practice law in November of 2000. Kara worked for three years in private practice doing civil law before accepting her current position at the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office.
Kara has spent 16 years as a publIc defender fighting to ensure that her clients have equal access to legal options and that they are treated fairly in the way their cases are resolved.
